Super Bowl Thoughts

Finally. Super Bowl 44. A great season wrapping up in south Florida between two of the highest scoring teams in the NFL. I was looking forward to this game. My heart was hoping for a Saints win, but my brain told me that it was going to be the Colts. The great thing about this game was that I would have been happy with either team winning, but Drew Brees said it best when he said that they had a city and perhaps an entire nation behind them.



Here were my thoughts as the game progressed...



Most singers do a nice job with the national anthem, but I thought Carrie Underwood was absolutely amazing. She belted it out with some heart and soul.



The first half wasn't anywhere near as high scoring as I thought it would be. 10-6 is a pretty low scoring affair. You gotta give it to the Indy Defense though. They shut down New Orleans near the goal line. I thought Dwight Freeney looked pretty darn good for being injured. He cut through that Saints offensive line seemingly at will. That guy is just a machine and still required two guys to double up on him. Pierre Garcon's TD was a classic lob from Manning and was basically the highlight of the entire first half.



The halftime show was dull, bland, and uneventful. I half expected to see The Who grab walking canes by the end of it. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy their music but these guys shouldn't have been the half time show. I read an interesting statistic in the paper this morning: the youngest performer during the Super Bowl half time show since Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction was Prince who was 49 years old. C'mon...The Who? I understand that the NFL paid their expenses, but the band didn't get paid for this performance. They have no upcoming album. What was the motivation? If you missed the performance, you didn't miss anything. In fact, I momentarily forgot what decade I was in.



The 2nd half started out incredible. The onside kick and the ensuing melee was just what the Saints needed to get going. That drive ended with Pierre Thomas fighting his way into the endzone.



The Colts marched down the field and Addai returned the favor. That was fun to watch. Joseph Addai was so impressive on that drive that he looked like the Addai of old.



After Stover missed his 51 yard attempt, Drew Brees and the Saints lit it up to bring them back into the lead. Jeremy Shockey's TD and Lance Moore's absolutely incredible 2-pt conversion put them up 24-17. This had finally become a game!!



Only a few minutes left. Peyton Manning looked like a surgeon slicing the Saints Defense on the following drive, right up until his interception that ultimately sealed the game. For a guy like Manning who is such a perfectionist, this one is going to haunt him.



It was a good game overall and the picture of Drew Brees and his son at the end of the game was absolutely priceless. Congratulations to the New Orleans Saints.
