Breaking News: Eddie Lacy has been traded to the New Orleans Saints. Word about the trade first broke this morning and an official announcement from the team will be coming this afternoon.
When asked about whether the trade had anything to do with Lacy's struggles last season to stay in shape, Coach Mike McCarthy acknowledged that this was an issue he spoke to Lacy about in January but that it did not influence the team's decision. McCarthy added, "Eddie is a very talented player and will bring much-needed depth to the Saints organization. We wish him well."
The Packers will receive a 2nd and 3rd-round draft pick in exchange for Eddie Lacy.
Green Bay desperately needs a solid ground game to setup the aerial attack this season. Jordy Nelson will return from an ACL tear during the 2015 preseason, and with James Jones not expected back, the Pack has their eyes on a potential free agent wide receiver to play opposite Nelson. Randall Cobb will resume his role as a slot receiver in 2016. A repeat of 2015's awful ground game can only hinder the chances for Green Bay to make a serious push into the post-season.
Eddie Lacy was a Top 5 fantasy draft pick last season. His 758 yards rushing last year was a significant disappointment for fantasy owners. Perhaps it was the pressure from unrealistically-high expectations, but Lacy was considered by many to be 2015's Fantasy Bust. He had a career-low of just 3 touchdowns and just 20 receptions. Those are the kinds of stats that make fantasy owners cringe when paying such a premium to draft him in the first round.
Lacy will have to compete for the starting gig in New Orleans which should push him to get himself back into playing condition. As talented as he is, there is simply no way that the Packers are going to let him go. If you haven't guessed it by now, this is not an official announcement, but rather an April Fool's Day prank. We expect Lacy to rebound nicely and be productive this year for Green Bay.
