Gil has a lat strain that is going to keep him out for at least the first few months of the season, with the hope being the defending Rookie of the Year pitches in the summer. The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster, and the Yankees used that space to sign Ryan Yarbrough.
Yarbrough was released by the Blue Jays on Sunday, and it didn't take long for him to find a new home. He'll be a multi-inning option for the Yankees, and possibly could make starts if options like Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco scuffle. Luis Gil (lat) was placed on the IL to make room.
The Yankees placed Gil (lat) on the 60-day injured list Monday.
Warren will occupy one of the final rotation spots with Gerrit Cole out for the season and Luis Gil and Clarke Schmidt on the injured list to start the year. The 25-year-old right-hander finished spring training with a 4.19 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 19/5 K/BB ratio in 19 1/3 innings. He has moderate appeal in mixed fantasy leagues, but is a must-roster player in AL-Only leagues.
The 29-year-old hurler had a path to potentially crack the club's Opening Day roster after the injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil, but he struggled to a 5.02 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 14 1/3 innings in Grapefruit League action. He'll open the season in the rotation at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and should get an opportunity to pitch for the Yankees at some point during the 2025 season.
