NBC SportsJose Soriano allowed five hits, five runs, and three walks with nine strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Guardians on Friday.

Soriano started this game strong with six strikeouts through the first three innings. The Guardians did jump on him for two runs to that point though and wound up chasing him in the sixth. The last run charged to him came around to score in that sixth inning after relievers Ryan Zeferjahn and Reid Detmers - yes, he's technically a reliever - allowed the Guardians to rally. There was a bizarre point in that inning where three batters had reached base via walks from three different pitchers. Nevertheless, Soriano's stuff is exceptional. Led by his sinker and then slider, knuckle-curve, and splitter which each forced multiple swings and misses it feels like there's a great pitcher in here that's just a tweak or two away. He's scheduled to face the Rays next time out.

NBC SportsIan Anderson surrendered five runs -- four earned -- while getting three outs to take a loss in relief Wednesday against the Cardinals.

Pretty much everyone in the Angels pen besides Anderson was burnt out coming into this one -- and even Anderson, who threw 11 pitches Tuesday, was going back-to-back days -- but the team decided against calling up anyone. Anderson took over with a 5-3 lead in the seventh and blew the lead then. Even so, he was left in with the score tied to open the eighth. All three batters then reached against him, two of them while trying to sac bunt. Brock Burke, working for the third time in four days, took over and allowed the three runners to score before giving up four runs of his own. The Angels then used Reid Detmers, who has never been a reliever before and threw 40 pitches Monday, to finish the game off. It's really pretty disgusting that the Angels didn't protect their guys by bringing up a fresh arm, but they hoped to get away with it in advance of having Thursday off.

NBC SportsReid Detmers will pitch in relief to open the regular season.

Angels manager Ron Washington made it official that Jack Kochanowicz has locked up the fifth spot in the rotation with Detmers moving to relief. It's a substantial hit to his immediate fantasy appeal. The 25-year-old southpaw struck out 17 over 19 1/3 innings this spring in Cactus League action. His stuff should play up in shorter relief outings, but we're not anticipating him generating enough volume to make an impact for fantasy purposes in shallow mixed leagues.
