NBC SportsPirates optioned RHP David Bednar to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Was this the only way to get Derek Shelton to stop using him in the ninth? Bednar faced nine hitters in three appearances to begin the year and retired just three, giving up four runs and taking two losses to go along with a lone save. He did seem to be unlucky in the process -- much of the contact against him was soft -- but given how bad he was in the second half of last year and this spring, no further patience was warranted. The Pirates will probably turn to Colin Holderman and/or Dennis Santana in save chances. Neither seems like a must-grab player in shallow leagues right away. Carmen Mlodzinski might be more interesting if the Pirates opt to remove him from the rotation and put him back in short relief.

NBC SportsCarmen Mlodzinski was charged with four runs over 3 2/3 innings on Monday in a loss to the Rays.

Mlodzinski kept Tampa Bay's lineup off the scoreboard in the early stages of the contest, but things came unglued in the fourth inning when he was tagged for four runs on five hits, including run-scoring knocks from Rays rookies Kameron Misner and Jake Mangum, which chased him from the contest. He finished with four strikeouts and issued two walks. He's not a recommended fantasy option next Monday when he faces the Cardinals at home.

NBC SportsMitch Keller will start on Friday against the Marlins.

Keller, Bailey Falter and Andrew Heaney will close out the remainder of a four-game series against the Marlins after ace Paul Skenes takes the ball for his first-career Opening Day start. We're assuming fifth starter Carmen Mlodzinski will make his season debut on Monday against the Rays, but that hasn't been finalized.

NBC SportsPirates reassigned RHP Thomas Harrington, RHP Carson Fulmer, RHP Burch Smith, RHP Tanner Rainey and 1B/OF DJ Stewart to minor league camp.

No real surprises here as the Pirates announced earlier on Monday that Carmen Mlodzinski would break camp as the club's fifth starter over Harrington. The 23-year-old top pitching prospect figures to break into the majors at some point later this year.

NBC SportsCarmen Mlodzinski will be the fifth starter to open the season for the Pirates.

Or rather, he'll be one of the five starters for Pittsburgh, as the team hasn't set the rotation outside of Paul Skenes starting Opening Day. The opening comes with Jared Jones (elbow) unavailable to start the year, and Mlodzinski wins the job over pitchers like Thomas Harrington and Bubba Chandler -- for now. Mlodzinski is a former first-round pick, but doesn't have the stuff to be a good option in fantasy formats.
