Helsley struck out WIllie Castro and Jose Miranda before giving up a double to Harrison Bader. He was able to fan Matt Wallner to end the game and pick up his first -- and almost assuredly not last -- save of the season. Helsley was an elite closing option for the majority of 2024, and he should be one again in 2025.
Kiersey appears to be beating out Austin Martin for a gig, even though all things being equal, the Twins would probably prefer the right-handed bat (Kiersey is a lefty) behind the likes of Trevor Larnach and Matt Wallner. The 27-year-old Kiersey is hitting .275/.375/.375 in 48 plate appearances this spring.
David Bednar's struggles have set up the possibility that Santana or Colin Holderman could take over as the Pirates' closer. Santana seems like the better option based on his results last year, but his velocity is down about one mph this spring and he's settled for three strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. It's hard to feel very good about anyone in the Pittsburgh pen right now.
Even Wallner's one out today was hit 101.9 mph. The hits topped out at 110.5 mph. Wallner is 10-for-41 this spring, but he's up to five homers and also had a couple of doubles. That certainly doesn't scream leadoff man, but the Twins are planning to let him do his best Kyle Schwarber impersonation there.
Matt Wallner, Edouard Julien and Lee all homered off Bryan Baker in the fifth, accounting for all of the Twins' runs today. Lee is up to .308/.333/.538 in 27 plate appearances as he tries to win the second base job in Minnesota.
