The Orioles optioned Mayo to Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports.
Orioles manager Brandon Hyde told reporters Mayo is OK and will be re-evaluated on Tuesday. He appears to have dodged serious injury after being hit by a pitch on the right hand/wrist area by a 96-mph heater during Monday's spring contest. The 23-year-old top prospect is likely ticketed for Triple-A Norfolk at the outset of the year, but he projects as a power plus counting stats fantasy contributor once he gets another shot in the big leagues.
Mayo was immediately removed after being plunked by a 96 mph offering. The 23-year-old will likely undergo imaging to determine the severity of the injury. Mayo is likely going to open the season in Triple-A, but is one of the best hitting prospects in baseball.
Mayo was removed from Monday's Grapefruit League game versus the Red Sox in the sixth inning after being hit on the right hand/wrist by a pitch, Jacob Calvin Meyer of The Baltimore Sun reports.
The Orioles' best players this spring have been backup infielders ticketed for Triple-A: Soto is hitting .467, Vimael Machin is at .533 and Emmanuel Rivera hit his second homer today. There would be room for one on the roster if Gunnar Henderson joins Jorge Mateo on the IL initially, though since it'd presumably be a short stay, the Orioles might prefer to just go with Coby Mayo instead of adding someone to the 40-man.
