This move is procedural since Horwitz has been out for weeks already. The 27-year-old was originally set to miss six to eight weeks and he has already been out for six. The Pirates have been quiet about his progress, but its possible that Horwitz may be headed to a rehab assignment soon.
At least until Spencer Horwitz returns, Rodriguez will probably see considerable action at first in addition to serving as the Pirates' backup catcher. It should make him a decent option in two-catcher mixed leagues, if only for the first two or three weeks.
Hall is just 4-for-21 this spring, but three of his hits have left the yard. D.J. Stewart has taken over as the favorite in Pittsburgh to step in Spencer Horwitz's replacement at first base at the beginning of the season, but Hall still has a shot. The two have essentially the same OPS (.880 for Hall, .878 for Stewart).
