Estes gave up a two-run homer in the first to Cal Raleigh, and a long solo blast to Julio Rodriguez in the third. Minus those two plays the right-hander was ok, but those two plays pretty much guaranteed a mediocre outing for the 22-year-old. He allowed six hits and struck out three. Estes would be a very risky starting option for Wednesday against the Astros.
J-Rod absolutely clobbered a mistake from Joey Estes for a solo homer in the third to give Seattle a 3-0 lead. The outfielder also scored after drawing a walk on a Luke Raley homer in the ninth. It's the 14th homer of the season for Rodriguez, and his 49th RBI. A disappointing season to be sure -- some of it due to injury -- but a friendly reminder of just how talented the 23-year-old is.
Estes also struck out seven and didn't walk a single batter while posting a 28 percent whiff rate and 30 percent CSW. Estes has enjoyed a great month of August, allowing 12 earned runs in 35 2/3 innings (3.03 ERA) with 30 strikeouts to just four walks. He'll look to keep that going in a strong matchup against the Mariners next week.
Heim took Joey Estes deep for his 12th home run and 52nd RBI of the season. It's been a far cry from his impressive 2023 campaign and, despite the home run, Heim is not a must-roster outside of deep two-catcher formats.
Estes allowed just two hits and three hard-hit balls to the 21 batters he faced today. He struck out five. Since rejoining the rotation at the beginning of the month, he has a 3.03 ERA in five starts. We'd still be nervous about trusting him in mixed leagues at this point, but he does get Texas, Seattle and Detroit in his next three starts. He'll be especially intriguing for the Sept. 2-8 week, since he'll face both the Mariners and Tigers then.
