Moniak just signed Thursday, so it's not a huge surprise the 26-year-old doesn't get a starting nod, and that's before considering how poorly he's played at the highest level. Jordan Beck is the starting left fielder against Ryan Pepiot and the Rays.
Moniak will earn $1.25 million. His competition for corner outfield at-bats is Jordan Beck, Nick Martini and Sean Bouchard, so there's a good chance he'll wind up getting a long look against right-handers.
It's an ominous development for young outfielders Jordan Beck and Zac Veen, but it's an interesting landing spot for Moniak to potentially revive his career. The 26-year-old former first-overall pick from the 2016 MLB Draft was released earlier this week by the Angels, but didn't take long to find a new home. He'll benefit from Coors Field's hitter-friendly environment, but we're not anticipating a significant fantasy impact based on his lackluster track record at the highest level.
The Rockies continue to make completely baffling roster decisions. Their latest masterpiece involves the combination of jettisoning Nolan Jones to Cleveland at the absolute nadir of his trade value before shipping one of their top prospects in Veen to Triple-A instead of letting him play everyday in the majors. It'll be Jordan Beck opening the year in right field with journeyman Nick Martini in left field. You can't make this stuff up, seriously.
Jordan Beck, on the other hand, went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts. The Rockies want Beck to win the right field job, but he's hit just .218/.295/.400 this spring. Bouchard is at .364/.391/.705, which might earn him an early look. Zac Veen is also possibly in the mix. Sam Hilliard and Nick Martini are still around as well, but neither of them should start.
