NBC SportsMaking his first start of the year, Zach Dezenzo went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts as the Astros' right fielder on Saturday.

It was particularly surprising to see the Astros keep both Cam Smith and Dezenzo to begin the year, particularly since they don't appear to be at all interested in using Jose Altuve at second base right now. They two will rarely start at the same time as long as everyone is healthy, so one probably ought to be playing regularly in Triple-A right now. If they were to make the move, Dezenzo would presumably be the one sent down.

NBC SportsYainer Diaz is not in the starting lineup Saturday against the Mets.

Diaz will get a night off; one of several regulars who are not in the lineup. Victor Caratini will be the catcher for Spencer Arrighetti while Diaz rests. Brendan Rodgers, Cam Smith and Jake Myers also will get a rest and will be replaced in the lineup by Chas McCormick, Mauricio Dubon and Zach Dezenzo.

NBC SportsCam Smith is not in the lineup for Saturday's game against the Mets.

Astros manager Joe Espada is taking the opportunity to get his bench into action, which is a common strategy most managers employ in the early stages of the regular season. It'll be Zach Dezenzo in right field with Smith taking a seat after going 1-for-5 with a pair of walks through two games.

NBC SportsAstros released 1B Jon Singleton.

Singleton hit just .174/.239/.195 this spring. With Zach Dezenzo hitting well and Christian Walker healed, there is just no real need for Singleton in Houston. He could still re-sign with them on a minor league deal, but he figures to test the free agent market first.

NBC SportsThe Athletic's Jim Bowden reports Cam Smith will start in right field for the Astros on Opening Day.

Take this one with a grain of salt. While the Astros have made no public indications that Smith, who isn't currently on the 40-man roster, has made the team yet, Bowden is saying he'll be the starting right fielder on Opening Day. It's not hard to envision, though the Astros still have other options available including Zach Dezenzo, Cooper Hummel and Zack Short. Smith, who was acquired along with Isaac Paredes and Hayden Wesneski in the offseason trade for Kyle Tucker, is the logical choice and offers the most fantasy upside.
