It was particularly surprising to see the Astros keep both Cam Smith and Dezenzo to begin the year, particularly since they don't appear to be at all interested in using Jose Altuve at second base right now. They two will rarely start at the same time as long as everyone is healthy, so one probably ought to be playing regularly in Triple-A right now. If they were to make the move, Dezenzo would presumably be the one sent down.
Diaz will get a night off; one of several regulars who are not in the lineup. Victor Caratini will be the catcher for Spencer Arrighetti while Diaz rests. Astros manager Joe Espada is taking the opportunity to get his bench into action, which is a common strategy most managers employ in the early stages of the regular season. It'll be Zach Dezenzo in right field with Smith taking a seat after going 1-for-5 with a pair of walks through two games.
Astros rookie Cam Smith came through in his MLB debut, first with pregame donuts for his teammates and then a key hit in his team's 3-1 win over the Mets.
