CBS Sports' No. 3 prospect has already proven his value since his Opening Day debut
As the early days of the 2025 regular season continue, here are three things we’ll be keeping an eye on around the baseball world today: 1. Campbell, Red Sox nearing agreement? Mayer is yet another top 20 overall prospect in the Red Sox system and hit .333/.455/.528 this spring. Boston seems to want to keep Mayer at shortstop and now has Kristian Campbell at second base, which likely means that an injury to Trevor Story is likely the only way for Mayer to earn regular playing time early in the 2025 season. Given Story's injury history, that's not an unlikely path, and Mayer would be an immediate add if that were to happen.

The only Red Sox hitting are two guys who weren't certain to be in the lineup at this point a couple of weeks ago. Of course, unlike Kristian Campbell, with Abreu it was all about whether he'd be ready after an extended illness this spring. He wasn't only ready, but he's 7-for-10 with two homers, six RBI and a 0/5 K/BB to date. The Red Sox have been hitting him sixth, but they might want to have him switch spots with cleanup man Triston Casas against righties. They presumably won't drop Rafael Devers in the order just yet.
