The 31-year-old southpaw scattered just two hits on the day and didn't allow a base on balls. He exited with a 2-0 lead and in line for a hard-earned victory, but the Rockies' bullpen was unable to hang on for him. Freeland got 12 swings and misses on just 67 pitches in the ballgame, registering an elite CSW of 42 percent. He remains a sketchy fantasy option at best for Thursday's matchup against the Phillies in Philadelphia.
With left-hander Kyle Freeland on the bump for Colorado, Mead will get the leadoff nod, and Yandy Diaz will hit second as the designated hitter. Mead was outstanding this spring, and it's worth noting he's a former top prospect who has looked the part in the minors. He'll get a chance to set the table for the Rays, and that could be a major boon for his fantasy prospectus. Jonathan Aranda is not in the lineup, which will likely be the norm against southpaws.
Ryan Pepiot, replacing the injured Shane McClanahan, and Kyle Freeland face off
Freeland, 31, gave up a long solo homer to Nick Maton and two more runs in the fourth. The southpaw has been shaky this spring with an ERA of 6.16, but it's nice to see he was able to miss some bats. Not nice enough to suggest Freeland to ever be a fantasy option, but nice still.
Renfroe delivered a bases-clearing three-run double off of Kyle Freeland in the second inning that extended the Royals' early edge to 5-0. He then put the exclamation mark on the victory with a two-run triple in the sixth inning. The 33-year-old outfielder is having a very strong spring for the Royals, hitting .348 (8-for-23) with a homer, nine RBI and a stolen base. He's still an afterthought in most fantasy drafts, going well after the top 450 picks overall.
