Matt Mervis and Graham Pauley homered off him. Warren struck out six. He'll be in the rotation initially with Clarke Schmidt landing on the injured list. He'll need to outpitch Carlos Carrasco -- maybe by a considerable margin -- for it to be more than a brief stay, but he is easily the better bet of the two.
Yarbrough was released by the Blue Jays on Sunday, and it didn't take long for him to find a new home. He'll be a multi-inning option for the Yankees, and possibly could make starts if options like Will Warren and Carlos Carrasco scuffle. Luis Gil (lat) was placed on the IL to make room.
Carrasco, 38, signed a minor league deal with the Yankees on Feb. 5 and could have opted out of the deal on Saturday. Instead, the right-hander s 1.69 ERA in five spring training games, including four starts, earned him his new deal with New York.
The move opens up a 40-man roster spot, and the Yankees used that space to add Carlos Carrasco to the active roster. Cole will miss all of 2025 after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and he could miss a portion -- potentially a significant one -- of the 2026 campaign as well.
Carrasco is added to the 40-man roster after the Yankees place Gerrit Cole (elbow) on the 60-day injured list. The right-hander will be a part of the Yankees' rotation with New York dealing with several injuries to their projected starting five. Carrasco will be a matchup-dependent streamer to begin the year.
