With the Astros throwing left-hander Framber Valdez, the Mets will turn to Acuna at second base instead of the left-handed-hitter Baty. Acuna didn't have as impressive a spring, and Baty will likely be on the strong side of the platoon and starting against right-handed pitchers, but it's worth noting that the Mets are going to give both young players at-bats early in the season. The Mets' full lineup is: Francisco Lindor SS, Juan Soto RF, Pete Alonso 1B, Mark Vientos 3B, Brandon Nimmo LF, Starling Marte DH, Tyrone Taylor CF, Luisangel Acuna 2B, Luis Torrens C.
Alvarez should be 3-5 weeks away from rejoining the Mets lineup. Luis Torrens and Hayden Senger will be filling in for him.
It was another productive day at spring training for the Mets and a few players in particular stood out.
Senga racked up six strikeouts on the evening and didn't allow a single hit against the Nationals. The only blemish on his day came in the opening inning as CJ Abrams led off with a walk, stole second base and wound up scoring on a throwing error by catcher Luis Torrens. The 32-year-old right-hander has quietly had a terrific spring for the Mets, posting a 2.00 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and a 9/2 K/BB ratio over nine innings.
Torrens led off the second inning with a single and scored the Mets' first run on a two-run knock off the bat of Luisangel Acuna. He then smacked an RBI triple off of Shinnosuke Ogasawara in the third inning and raced home on a run-scoring single by Jose Siri. Torrens also added a two-run single in the fourth and scored on Siri's RBI double. With his three-hit attack, the 28-year-old backstop is now hitting .275 (11-for-40) with a homer and seven RBI in Grapefruit League play.
