Rosenthal notes that it's a $5 million payday for Hays with a chance to make another million in incentives. The 29-year-old outfielder was non-tendered in November by the Phillies after he struggled with Philadelphia while also dealing with a kidney infection, but he's a career .261/.313/.432 hitter who does a good job in the outfield. He'll likely be on the short-side of a platoon; possibly with Jake Fraley.
Fraley hit a career-best .277 last season, but he mustered just five homers in 382 plate appearances and finished a 95 OPS+. The Reds will be looking at him as either their left or right fielder against right-handers.
