Cruz obliterated a back-door slider off of Connor Gillispie deep into the right field stands for his first long ball of the season. He made it look effortless as his top hand flew off the bat, but it still left the park in about 0.1 seconds. Two of his other balls in play were also hit hard and very easily could've wound up being hits. His talent and physical tools are tantalizing and a game like this where he hits a missile and steals a base reminds us of how high his ceiling truly is.
This was after Colin Holderman blew a two-run lead in the eighth. Bednar gave up a triple to Nick Fortes (it should have been a double, but Oneil Cruz played in badly), intentionally walked Xavier Edwards and surrendered a walkoff single to Kyle Stowers (that probably would have been a triple under normal circumstances). Bednar isn't necessarily permanently broken, but he's shown nothing of late to deserve responsibilities late in games. The Pirates don't have any great alternatives at closer, but Dennis Santana and Holderman both have to be better than Bednar is right now.
Maybe save the steals for the season, Oneil. His seven attempts (six successes) this spring are five more than he totaled in his previous six Grapefruit League campaigns. Cruz was 22-for-23 in 146 regular-season games last year.
