Following Monday's overtime victory, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle gave McConnell credit for willing the team to the extra period. The veteran point guard took on a more prominent role within the rotation, as Tyrese Haliburton was out with an injury and Andrew Nembhard was ejected during the third quarter. McConnell's point total did not increase substantially, but he did dish out 13 assists. T.J. will have added value if Haliburton has to miss more time.
Nembhard, the lone Pacers starter available for Monday's game, was ejected when he got into an altercation with Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert. After the Pacers guard inadvertently elbowed Mike Conley on a drive to the basket, Gobert gave him a forearm to the upper body. Nembhard threw the ball at Gobert, and both players were ejected. He finished with 12 points, two rebounds, three assists and one three-pointer in 19 minutes. T.J. McConnell will play more minutes since Tyrese Haliburton is also out.
The Pacers will be without four starters for Monday's game, including Haliburton and Nesmith. With Andrew Nembhard being the lone available starter, he's worth adding wherever he's available, and T.J. McConnell will also have added fantasy value. As for Nesmith's absence, Bennedict Mathurin will return to the starting lineup, raising Benn's fantasy ceiling.
Both point guards were initially listed as questionable, but Indiana will have both available against their division rival. Haliburton is back after a three-game absence, which will likely push Bennedict Mathurin back to the bench and take away some of Andrew Nembhard's playmaking upside. McConnell will fill out his typical role off the bench as a reserve guard, though his upside will be limited with Haliburton healthy.
McConnell left Saturday's game against the Hawks in the first quarter with a right ankle sprain, but is available Monday against the Bulls after he was initially listed as questionable. The 32-year-old point guard will figure prominently in this game as starting point guard Tyrese Haliburton (hip) has already been ruled out.
