The team also announced the signings of RB Zavier Scott, LB Max Tooley, OLB Gabriel Murphy, OG Henry Byrd, DT Marcellus Johnson, OT Leroy Watson, WR Lucky Jackson, WR Thayer Thomas, DT Jonathan Harris, and DT Travis Bell to R/F deals. Rypien was the team's third quarterback behind Nick Mullens this year. He may have to compete with Mullens for the QB3 job next year if Sam Darnold returns and J.J. McCarthy is healthy.
This is only news after head coach Kevin O'Connell failed to comment on who the backup quarterback would be for the Vikings' Wilcard matchup with the Rams. Nick Mullens will fill the position should something happen to starter Sam Darnold. Also inactive for the Vikings are DL Levi Drake Rodriguez, C Dan Feeney, OT Walter Rouse, and LB Pat Jones II.
Sam Darnold enters tonight’s wild-card game as the Vikings’ unquestioned starter. Nick Mullens has been the free agency addition’s backup all season, as he is closing out his third season with the team. But Daniel Jones‘ recent promotion from the practice squad could shake things up as the Vikings enter the playoffs. Kevin O’Connell said […]
Jones was promoted to the Vikings' 53-man roster earlier this week. Mullens has served as the backup to Sam Darnold all season, but when asked if Jones or Mullens would serve as the QB2 behind the Darnold, O'Connell opted not to say. The hope for all involved is that we don't need to find out the answer on Monday when the Vikings take the field against the Rams. Darnold isn't at risk of missing the NFC Wild Card game against the Rams, and meaning the only way we would see Jones or Mullens is if Darnold were to suffer any injury.
