A stretch-run X-factor as the Broncos locked down the AFC's final playoff spot, Mims had his least productive game in over two months as the Broncos were sent packing. The second-year pro was straight up not involved in the Broncos' attack until coach Sean Payton started getting him some mid-season carries. He then parlayed those into December passing-game targets and flashed the game-breaking ability the Broncos thought they were drafting in the 2023 second round. It's baffling why it took Payton so long to get Mims involved, but the good news for dynasty managers is that he did. Still two months shy of his 23rd birthday, Mims could have a productive back half of his rookie contract. Maybe he's already at his ceiling, but there's finally reason for optimism.
Why was Mims the only player flagged on this play?
Estime played well as a clock-killer in the second half but his most important play was on the Broncos' first drive. On first-and-10 from the Chiefs' 32-yard line, Estime helped set up Marvin Mims Jr.'s first touchdown, pulling off the play-action fake before contributing a road-grading block for Mims en route to the end zone. Estime is earning Sean Payton's trust by doing the dirty work. He is a shaky RB4/5 against the Bills next week but Estime appears to be ending his rookie season on a high note.
McLaughlin did very little to retain the starting role averaging fewer yards per carry (2.4) than both Javonte Williams (5.6) and Audric Estime (2.8). Williams also thrived as a receiver while Estime scored a touchdown and nailed a key block on Marvin Mims Jr.'s first touchdown. McLaughlin may be reduced to a rotational role against the Bills next week.
Mims has evidently earned a reliable role in the Broncos' passing attack. While his four touchdowns in two weeks speak volumes, a nifty play design on the Broncos' first drive deserves even more attention. On first-and-10 from the Chiefs' 32-yard line, Sean Payton called in a play specifically designed to feature Mims' post-catch talents. Bo Nix initially ran a play-action fake, which sent Audric Estime up the field, en route to a key red zone block, before faking another handoff to Troy Franklin on an end-around. Mims was then left open to haul in the screen-pass target in the flats before scampering off for the 32-yard score. Rather than residing in the doghouse, Mims is now one of Payton's featured offensive weapons in scoring position. He is flex-worthy against the Bills next week.
