In the last week, the Giants have gone from Tommy DeVito as the only quarterback on their depth chart to adding Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston.
Wilson signed with the Giants on Tuesday, inking a one-year deal with $10.5 million guaranteed. Per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the deal is loaded with incentives. Russ can make up to another $10.5 million via a variety of incentives and escalators. Because of this, the Giants' front office likely told Wilson he would get the first crack at the starting gig when he signed. Wilson is joined by Tommy DeVito and fellow free agent addition Jameis Winston on the roster. Winston is on a two-year deal and is being paid like a backup while DeVito's time in the spotlight should be over. Barring a surprise via the 2025 NFL Draft, Wilson should be penciled in as the Giants' Week 1 starter.
The Giants now have Wilson, Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito at QB
Jameis Winston is ready to take a bite out of the Big Apple. Start spreading the neWs, Winston posted on his X account Friday, a play on his infamous Eat a W pregame speech with Tampa Bay in 2017. Winston joins Tommy DeVito as the only quarterbacks on the Giants roster.
Although the Giants are undoubtedly tired of waiting on fellow free agent Aaron Rodgers, this hardly precludes his signing. Winston's deal is modest even for a backup, especially one with his box scores and experience. He's a seat warmer/emergency option for a team that had only Tommy DeVito under contract at the most important position. The question now becomes if he will be a clipboard holder or bridge option. It will be the former if Rodgers comes board. The latter if the G-Men take a Day 1 rookie QB. Our money is on the latter, as it's unlikely the Giants would want a quarterback room with a pair of players on the wrong side of 30. Now 31, Winston proved last season he's an old dog who won't be learning any tricks. He slings it all over the yard, interceptions and all. He's an "any given Sunday" No. 2 option, but a poor bet as a multi-month starter.
