Jason Foley

Foley came in with one out in the ninth and retired two of the three batters he faced. The Tigers have, in recent months, liked mixing and matching late in games. Still, they've just never come up with a better option than Foley, and even though Foley's stuff isn't what it was last year, he's dragged his ERA back under 3.00 of late. The save today was his sixth since Aug. 15. He went the previous five weeks without one.

Holton's save was his seventh of the season. Jason Foley is the Tigers' closer, but Holton will continue to get save opportunities in the right matchups. He'll also start games as an opener. It's a fluid role as Tigers manager AJ Hinch uses him as Swiss army knife. Holton is 5-1 with a 2.35 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 61 strikeouts in 80 1/3 innings.

Foley's save was his 20th of the season and fifth since August 15th. Foley looked like he might be one of the best waiver adds of the season after he recorded his 11th save on May 24th, but he saved a total of four games from May 25th to August 14th. With a strong finish to the year, Foley will have a save total in the mid-20s and fantasy managers can't complain about getting that from a player that wasn't drafted in most leagues.

Foley made it look easy in this one, getting Mickey Moniak on a ground ball to second base, Matt Thaiss on a swinging third strike and Jo Adell on a swinging third strike to seal the Tigers' sixth consecutive victory. The 28-year-old hurler has now made good on 19 of his first 22 save chances on the season.

Shelby Miller started the ninth inning and got the first two outs, but after allowing an infield single to Anthony Rendon and plunking Brandon Drury, Tigers' skipper A.J. Hinch got his closer to finish it out. Foley needed just four pitches, getting Jo Adell to bounce into a fielder's choice to end it. He now holds a 3.23 ERA to go along with 18 saves in 21 chances on the season.
